"From the teachers’ perspective Student Theatre Goers was a wonderful scheme. If it were rolled out across year groups, the schools and their students would benefit immensely”

The Background
In 2009 a research programme was undertaken by Arts Inform, commissioned by Arts Council East through The National Skills Academy, looking at how arts organisations in Cambridge and Norwich were engaging with the Creative and Media Diploma. The Introduction of the Creative and Media Diploma in Cambridge and Norwich: What do the ‘Employers’ think? was completed in September 2009. Many questions and discussion points were generated by this research project, and Arts Council East and The NSA commissioned Arts Inform to undertake a second phase of research between January and July 2010.
For Phase II, two focus groups were formed with a selection of arts organisations in Cambridge and Norwich, to discuss key questions relating to how arts employers can most effectively engage in the delivery of the Creative and Media Diploma in their region. Recommendations from these discussions have formed the basis of a set of resources, highlighting best practice and forming a template for employers / CMD providers, to be disseminated widely via the NSA website. Topics covered by the Focus Group included Understanding of the Creative and Media Diploma and Employer Engagement, Project Content, Communication, Sustainable Financial Frameworks and other relevant issues including Child Protection and Health and Safety. Both Groups have put together a sustainable collective offer, highlighting the CMD opportunities available within each organisation. Additionally, a series of pilot employer engagement projects was run in each region during January to June 2010. Elements of these projects will also be included as case studies in the NSA resources.
