The canopies project was a strong response to the challenge of the brief, which was to revitalise a down at heel town centre shopping street once the blight of traffic congestion had been

removed through the construction of a relief road.

A joyous continuous linear canopy would be erected down the full length of the street at particular times of year. A series of changing images, realised through imaginative graphic design in vivid colour would transform the appearance and character of the street, giving it a Mardi Gras feel, in stark contrast to its former appearance and character.
